What is the ADI Part 2 Test?
The ADI Part 2 test is the second stage of becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in the UK. It focuses on your driving ability, ensuring you can demonstrate a very high standard of driving — much higher than a normal learner driver test.
During the test, you are expected to show:

Independent Driving
Drive for ~20 minutes following a sat nav or road signs independently.

The full test lasts approximately one hour from start to finish.

⚠️ Only 3 Attempts Allowed — Be Fully Prepared
You are allowed a maximum of three attempts to pass the ADI Part 2 test.
If you are not successful after all three attempts, you will need to wait two years from the date you passed your ADI Part 1 test before you can restart the entire process — including retaking the ADI Part 1 test.
This makes professional preparation absolutely essential. Don't leave it to chance.

'Show Me, Tell Me' Questions
You will be asked a total of 5 vehicle safety questions during the test:
3 'Tell Me' Questions
Asked at the start of the test, before driving begins. These test your knowledge of vehicle safety.
2 'Show Me' Questions
Asked while you are driving — for example, demonstrating how to clean the windscreen using controls and wipers.
⚠️ Each incorrect answer = a driving fault. If all 5 are answered incorrectly, or you lose control while responding to a 'show me' question, this results in a serious fault.
Eyesight Check
At the beginning of the test, you will be required to read a vehicle number plate from a set distance:
Modern Number Plate
Must be read from 27 metres away.
Older Style Number Plate
Must be read from 27.5 metres away.
Reversing Exercises
You will be asked to complete 2 reversing manoeuvres from the following options:
- Parallel parking at the side of the road
- Reversing into a parking bay and then driving out
- Driving forward into a parking bay and reversing out
- Pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing ~2 car lengths, then safely rejoining traffic
Independent Driving Section
You will drive independently for around 20 minutes by following either:
Sat Nav
The examiner will provide and set up the sat nav. You are not allowed to use your own device.
Road Signs
Follow road signs to navigate independently. The examiner will inform you which method to use.
